The NGO Council of Kenya is urging the major political parties in Kenya to hold Free and fair party nominations through the best preferred internal democrating process in each party so as to the country may uphold the democratic process as enshrined in our 2010 constitution. The NGO Council regrets that some major political parties have started following undemocratic roots by doing consensus without involvement of Members who should otherwise have a bigger say in nominating the candidates for the general scheduled for 9th August 2022., The concept of consensus among candidates is good but it disadvantages the members and citizens. The NGO Council urges that the the party members who are also obedient citizens should be accorded an opportunity to nominate the best candidate among many others striving for the party ticket so as to contest in august general elections.
Party leaders should stop purporting to know who is best for members while violating the basic tenets of democracy that must begin with political parties.
Parties failing to enforce democracy in their parties to turn around and claim general elections were rigged and this is not good for the nation.
We urge political parties to ensure party internal democracy reigns supreme as we have seen cases of unpopular leaders being forced down the throat of voters.
As a country we must embrace and abide by democratic principles. There are no shortcuts and no excuses, parties should avoid divisive nominations and exercise internal democracy.
As National Council of NGOs we shall stand with kenyans and stakeholders in democracy to ensure democratic principles are applied in our keyan ahead of 2022 general elections.
